Based on the book Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind, this project imagines the impossible perfume of a killer. In the novel, the protagonist murders young virgin women to extract their scent. I translated this narrative into a conceptual perfume kit, designing a bottle and pairing it with two selected excerpts: one depicting the murder, the other the distillation. Together, the bottle and book sit within a custom-designed box.

THE SYSTEMThe system relies on a deliberate pairing of cursive and serif typefaces, a combination that reinforces the project’s dark, elegant character. With the book set in 18th-century France, I wanted to pay homage to the time period while maintaining a contemporary feel.

A selection of the original product sketches I created on Figma before working three-dimensionally. I was captivated by the bottles’ spherical heads, which evoked the silhouette of a woman, while the black rope around the neck felt distinctly like a necklace.

    THE PRODUCT

I created a kit of parts: the bottle, book, and box.

The top lid slides in and out, the transparent material hinting at the silhouette of the perfume. The bottom drawer holds the book.
Made from the same material as the box, the book highlights two chapters that detail the creation of the scent. In the more visceral moments, the text begins to bleed and distort, hinting at the evil woven into the perfume’s origin.
