‘DON’T SAY GAY’ BOOK

In March 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education bill, known by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. This legislation restricts discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in Florida’s primary schools, sparking national debates on censorship and identity.

For a book design project, I interpreted Alex Woodward’s article, What is Florida’s ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill?, from The Independent. Through themes of censorship and concealment, I used translucent vellum paper and hide/reveal techniques, manipulating the physical page to create an interactive design that mirrors the article’s exploration of visibility and suppression.
The cover is black ink printed on black paper, following the book’s themes of hide and reveal. The black barely conceals the hot pink paper hiding underneath. The wiro binding complements this aesthetic, adding a raw, tactile element to the overall presentation.Hide and reveal methods are furthered by the use of vellum, which adds an overlay texture in some pages and conceals text in others.

The vellum crosses out words on the right side and with the flip of a page, it mirrors this effect on the opposite side.
